Jakarta, 14 July 2026 – RedDoorz, the largest multi-brand hospitality and accommodation technology platform in Southeast Asia, is seeing sport tourism reshape domestic travel behaviour in Indonesia. Rather than choosing a destination first, more travellers are now planning their trips around sporting events.
This trend was reflected during the Sindoro Sumbing Triathlon, the first sport tourism event supported by RedDoorz as the Official Accommodation Partner. Previously, RedDoorz's involvement in sports focused on providing accommodation for Indonesian athletes through its partnership with the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI).
During the Sindoro Sumbing Triathlon 2026, RedDoorz recorded a significant increase in occupancy across its properties in Wonosobo Regency, with average occupancy rising from around 60% during a normal period to 81% throughout the event. Meanwhile, occupancy across 21 RedDoorz properties located near the Sindoro-Sumbing area reached 70% during the event. Over the same period, bookings also increased by 30%, with more than 1,500 bookings recorded.
"We are seeing a shift in traveller behaviour. Rather than choosing a destination first, more people are travelling because of an event and then planning their itinerary around it. Sport tourism is creating more purposeful travel demand while opening new opportunities for emerging destinations to attract visitors," said Gusti Raganata, Head of Government Relations at RedDoorz.
RedDoorz also observed a change in guests' length of stay during the Sindoro Sumbing Triathlon 2026. The average length of stay increased from one night to three nights, indicating that many participants and visitors chose to extend their trips after the event while taking the opportunity to explore the attractions and experiences around the Sindoro-Sumbing area.
These findings align with the Indonesian government's efforts to position sport tourism as one of the country's emerging tourism growth drivers. According to Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism, the global sport tourism industry is estimated to be worth approximately US$625 billion (around Rp11,306 trillion), highlighting its significant potential to drive regional tourism and local economic growth.
For RedDoorz, Wonosobo demonstrates how sporting events can strengthen the appeal of emerging destinations. In addition to its mountainous landscape, which is well-suited for endurance sports, the region serves as one of the main gateways to the Dieng tourism area and offers rich cultural attractions, local cuisine, village tourism, and agro-tourism experiences that continue to attract travellers.
This potential was further demonstrated through the Sindoro Sumbing Triathlon 2026, which coincided with the 201st Anniversary of Wonosobo Regency and attracted approximately 10,000 visitors. The event featured around 200 triathletes, with a total of approximately 600 athletes and accompanying supporters, as well as around 7,000 Fun Walk participants. According to RedDoorz, the presence of participants and visitors created a multiplier effect that benefited various sectors of the local economy, from increased demand for accommodation and transportation to higher business activity among local MSMEs.
Wonosobo Regent Afif Nurhidayat said that the Sindoro Sumbing Triathlon 2026 has generated positive economic impact for the region by supporting the hospitality, transportation, food and beverage, and local MSME sectors. He also expressed his appreciation for the support of various partners, including RedDoorz as the Official Accommodation Partner, whose support helped ensure adequate accommodation capacity for thousands of participants and visitors. "Collaborations like this play an important role in delivering a positive experience for visitors while strengthening Wonosobo's position as a growing sport tourism destination," he said.
Through its network of 56 properties across Wonosobo Regency, including 21 properties located within approximately 15 minutes of the event venue, RedDoorz provided participants and visitors with a wide range of comfortable, affordable, and conveniently located accommodation options throughout the event.
"For us, sport tourism is about much more than driving accommodation demand during an event. It also introduces emerging destinations to new travellers and creates opportunities for repeat visits in the future. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with local governments and event organisers to strengthen Indonesia's sport tourism ecosystem and support more balanced growth across domestic tourism," Gusti concluded.
